Djing and Music Production
On running a pilot ‘Beatboxing’ workshop with Rationale Arts we received supportive feedback which informed the need to create a bespoke programme:
DR DECKS
Children get visited by a Hip-hop doctor who has a portable DJ system, instantly transforming the space into a fun-filled party environment. Children learn to create beats, using percussion breaks,
basslines and other musical content sampled from pre-existing records. The Music created can also be used to sing over.
Dr Decks uses equipment that can play at least two sources of recorded music simultaneously and mix them together. Music production is perfect for creating and managing songs, especially for kids who like to compose.
When children get on the DJ deck, you can instantly see their faces light up. No matter their physical ability the children will become fully engaged and inspired by this highly accessible artistic activity.
SMASHING STREET ART
Art is important because it encompasses all the developmental domains in child development.
As kids manipulate a paintbrush or paint canister, their fine motor skills improve. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence. And children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of
thinking, which extends well beyond the craft room.
This session is provided by an expert street artist who will teach the child how to create their own artistic alphabet and develop drawing skills to create original characters for illustrations.
The artist will deliver a session that is personalised and the session will end with children having their own ‘tag’ or signature that they can use to brighten up their bedside both on the ward and in their own home.
BEDSIDE BOXING
Making simple vocal sounds through the microphone, patients work together, each making different sounds. These sounds are recorded, mixed and played back to them.
For a child who cannot form words but can make sounds, this has proved to be a very liberating experience- adding their voice to a recording with others not only gives them a sense of autonomy but also allows them to feel an equal part of a group.
In this session, patients will develop by exercising their vocal muscles, respond to cues, work in a team and experience sensory stimulation through sound and
rhythm.
HIP HOP HAND PLAY
Teaching children simple hand and arm movements from street dance. Ideal for teaching by the bedside or for children with limited mobility.
The sessions can be delivered on a 1.1 basis or in small groups were wheelchairs can also be incorporated into the routines the children learn.
Giving children with complex needs or limited mobility the chance to join other patients and be part of street dance.
About the Facilitators- Rationale Arts whose skills and years of experience working with children from a range of backgrounds are well placed to lead this session.
